Pomegranate- The Fruit of Jannah!

You open one of these round balls and red crystalline structures, glistening like rubies pour out in your hand. All are neatly tucked up against a cushiony wall, a hard padded skin covering them for protection. These embellished beads lined up in symmetry leave you awe stricken and unconsciously you can not but utter Subhan Allah! (Glory be to Allah). The beauty of the creator is indeed apparent in His creation.

Moreover, these aren’t just shiny, lifeless beads. They are squishy, juice filled pillows that you put in your mouth and upon their squirt you discover their inexpressibly marvelous sweet-tangy taste! Once you’ve penetrated into a bowl of Pomegranate seeds you cannot resist them.

This wonderful fruit has also been mentioned in Qur’an a couple of times. Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala describes for us the bounties he has poured on us in this world and among them is also this amazing creation of His.

            He says:

“And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees – of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.” [Surah An’am:99]

The Ayah here indicates a difference between the believers and those who do not believe, i.e. the believers take lessons and these bounties are signs that raise them in faith. They don’t pass by the creation of Allah obliviously. They ponder over them and as a result increase in their love and conviction for Allah. A true believer not just uses the eyes adorned on his face, he also perceives through the eyes of his heart!

In another verse in Surah Rahman Allah (Subhanahu wata’ala) has again mentioned the pomegranate as fruit of Paradise. He says:

“In both of them (gardens) are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates.” [Surah Rahman: 68]

Insha Allah! The believers will enjoy this ni’mah and other ni’am of Allah not only in this world but also in the hereafter, which is eternal and everlasting. So let us strive to seek Jannah and please our Rabb, not merely for the pomegranates that are going to be a thousand times luscious (imagine!), but also to be of those fortunate beings that will be able to see Allah, the creator of beauty in Jannah!

O Allah! as you have bestowed upon us your bounties in this world, do not deprive us of them in the hereafter. Ameen!
